Jennette's Pier Grand Opening
The new state-of-the-art, LEED certified, wind-powered, 1,000-foot concrete pier and 16,000 square-foot pier house will be christened and reopened to the public. Originally built in 1939, Jennette’s is the oldest fishing pier on the Outer Banks. Battered by storms and rebuilt many times throughout its seventy-year life, Jennette’s was knocked down by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, just after the pier and its five-acre tract were purchased by the NC Aquarium Society. The Aquarium-operated complex will feature educational classrooms and programs, alternative energy demonstrations, live animal exhibits, meeting facilities, a snack bar and tackle shop, and a host of other displays and features for good family fun….with great fishing too! FLAGS OVER HATTERAS -150th Civil War Anniversary
Come to a fun filled week at the beach and hear three nationally known authors and historians: James McPherson, Ed Bearss and Craig Symonds. Each evening one of them will give their talk following dinner (included in registration fee) at theaters Building in Hatteras. Attendance is limited. Living History programs are scheduled to be held at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse grounds August 27 - August 28. These programs will feature reenactors of the regiments involved in the action at Hatteras Inlet in August of 1861. These re-enactors will present artillery demonstrations, encampments, drills and period music. In addition, acicular era Ladies Fashion show will be presented as well as acicular era Battery forge. These programs are free of charge and are open to the public. A schedule of programs will be provided.

This four day event kicks off on Thursday, with community events happening all over the Outer Banks. 25th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition
Wright Brothers Memorial (mp 8), Kill Devil Hills, presented by Kitty Hawk Kites. This competitive fly is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned by the American Kiting Association. Throughout the weekend non-competitors can enjoy workshops, demonstrations and kite making for kids. The highlights of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music, and fast paced team flying that blends both kite control and speed.

The international centennial celebration of Orville Wright's 1911 world record glider flight that gave birth to modern soaring. A sailplane fly-in, vintage and modern gliders display, educational symposium, and special demonstrations are planned at Wright Brothers National Memorial. Three replica 1911 gliders, built especially for the occasion, are expected to fly at Jockey's Ridge State Park.

North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. 6pm to 8:30pm. Ghosts and strange aquatic creatures will greet children as they enjoy this "spooktacular" event. 108th Annual Celebration of the Wright Brothers First Flight
Wright Brothers National Memorial. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gather at the exact site at the exact time as the historic flight to remember, reflect and celebrate this milestone. The daylong anniversary tribute will be held at the site of Wright’s first flight. Visitors to the site experience a replica of the Wright Brothers’ 1903 encampment and majestic, 60-foot tall granite monument perched atop a 90-foot hill that serves a striking and lasting reminder of the important historical achievement that happened on this site a century ago.
